Questions about llms.txt
Where does the llms.txt file go?
Upload it to the root of your domain so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, the same place as robots.txt. Save it as plain UTF-8 text.
What is the llms.txt format?
It is Markdown. The file opens with an H1 holding the site name and a short summary in a blockquote. After that come H2 sections, each a list of Markdown links with an optional note after a colon. The proposal is published at llmstxt.org.
Which pages should I list in llms.txt?
List the pages that best explain what you do: main services or products, pricing, key guides, documentation and contact details. A short list with clear descriptions is more useful than every URL on the site.
Does llms.txt replace my XML sitemap or robots.txt?
No. A sitemap lists URLs for search engines, and robots.txt sets crawl rules. llms.txt is a separate, optional guide written for AI tools. Keep all three.
Do AI tools actually read llms.txt?
Not reliably. None of the major AI assistants has committed to reading it, and support changes over time. It takes a few minutes to make and is easy to keep current, so plenty of sites publish one anyway.
